North Star 22
Description
The North Star 22 is a lightweight, trailerable fiberglass masthead sloop designed by Howard Hughes (founder of Hughes Boatworks) and built by Hughes Boatworks Ltd. in Canada in 1972. Only a handful were produced under the North Star name before transitioning to the Hughes 22 (with over 100 total across variants), making it a rare find today. Featuring a keel/centerboard hull for shoal-draft versatility (1'7" board-up for trailering/beaching, 6' down for upwind performance) and a spade rudder option in fin-keel versions, it's a spirited daysailer or pocket cruiser for 2-4, emphasizing agility and fun in moderate winds. The compact interior includes a V-berth forward, settee berths, small galley area, and portable head, with ~5' headroom—perfect for weekends but cozy for longer stays. Powered by a small outboard (typically 4-6 hp).
