North Star 1500 / 35 (Hughes 35, Aura A35)
Description
The North Star 1500/35 (also known as the North Star 35, Hughes 35, or Aura A35) is a classic fiberglass cruiser-racer designed by the legendary firm Sparkman & Stephens (design #2166) and built by North Star Yachts Ltd. in Canada starting in 1974. After Howard Hughes acquired the company in 1977, production continued as the Hughes 35. Approximately 40 units were constructed, featuring a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder for protected, balanced steering and a masthead sloop rig for straightforward handling. Renowned for its solid construction (hand-laid fiberglass hull, balsa-cored deck), seaworthy motion, and timeless lines, it's suited for coastal cruising or light offshore passages with a spacious interior: V-berth forward, U-shaped galley, saloon with convertible settees (sleeps 4-5), enclosed head, and quarter berth aft. Standard power was a Universal Atomic 4 gasoline (30 hp), with many repowered to diesels. A shoal draft (4.8 ft) and tall rig options exist.
