Niagara 31
Description
The Niagara 31, designed by Mark Ellis and built by Hinterhoeller Yachts in Canada from 1976 to 1984 with approximately 120 hulls produced, is a compact yet capable 31-foot bluewater cruiser featuring a 10.33-foot beam, 24.5-foot waterline, and a protected 5.5-foot draft via a long encapsulated keel with 4,200 pounds of lead ballast in an 11,000-pound displacement for excellent stability, a comfort ratio of 28–32, and a capsize screening value under 1.85. Its masthead sloop (or optional cutter) rig delivers 540 square feet of sail area for a moderate SA/D of ~16.5 and PHRF ratings around 180–195, ensuring seakindly performance, heavy-weather composure, and effortless short-handed sailing.
