Newport 33 Standard Rig
Description
The Newport 33 Standard Rig (also known as the base or short/standard rig configuration of the Newport 33) is an American fiberglass cruiser-racer built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by Gary Mull. Production ran from 1971 to 1996 (with some hulls built later under different ownership), during which hundreds of hulls were constructed across variants (including shoal draft and tall rig options). It features a masthead sloop rig, fin keel with spade rudder for balanced handling and good upwind performance, solid GRP construction emphasizing spacious interior volume for its size (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths including V-forward, settees, quarter berth, galley, heads, and decent storage/tankage), inboard auxiliary (often diesel ~25–30 hp in later builds), and a reputation as a forgiving, stable coastal cruiser with solid club racing potential (PHRF ~159–174 average)—roomy, easy to sail, and well-suited for family weekend/overnight trips or light offshore use, though not heavy bluewater-oriented.
