Newport 33 Short Rig Shoal Draft
Description
The Newport 33 Short Rig Shoal Draft is a variant of the American fiberglass cruiser-racer built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by Gary Mull. The base Newport 33 (introduced ~1971) was a stretched evolution of the Newport 30 with production through the 1970s–1980s (hundreds of hulls across configurations). The short rig (lower mast for reduced air draft and easier handling in moderate/heavier winds) and shoal draft keel (shallower for access to thinner waters, beaching, or trailering ease) were optional configurations—emphasizing practicality for coastal/family cruising over maximum light-air performance. It features a masthead sloop rig, fin keel with spade rudder (shoal version reduces draft significantly), solid GRP construction, spacious interior (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths including V-forward, settees, quarter berth, galley, heads), inboard auxiliary (often Universal diesel ~25 hp), and a reputation as a forgiving, stable coastal cruiser with decent club racing ability (PHRF higher on shoal/short rig due to less efficiency)—roomy, easy to sail, and value-packed for weekend/overnight trips or light offshore use.
