Newport 28 Mk II
Description
The Newport 28 Mk II (also commonly called Newport 28-2 or Newport 28 Mark II) is an updated American fiberglass cruiser-racer built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by C&C Design (Cuthbertson & Cassian). Introduced in 1982 as a refinement of the original Newport 28 (1974–1981), production continued until around 1987, with more than 1,000 hulls total across the series (including this Mk II variant). It features a masthead sloop rig, updated high-aspect-ratio fin keel (deeper and more efficient than the original's swept-back fin), revised spade rudder for better tracking and responsiveness, redesigned coachroof/interior for improved ergonomics and space, and solid GRP construction emphasizing affordability, interior volume (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths including V-forward, settees, quarter berth, galley, heads), and inboard auxiliary (often Yanmar or Universal diesel standard in Mk II vs. optional Atomic 4 gas in earlier models).
