Newport 28 (Newporter 28)
Description
The Newport 28 is a popular American fiberglass cruiser-racer built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by the renowned Canadian firm C&C Design (Cuthbertson & Cassian). Production ran from 1974 to 1981 (with some hulls and evolutions continuing under variants like Newport 28-2 into the mid-1980s), during which more than 1,000 hulls were constructed across the series (including later updates), making it one of Capital's most successful models. It features a masthead sloop rig, fin keel with spade rudder (early models with shallower draft; later ones deeper for improved performance), solid GRP construction emphasizing spacious interior volume for its size (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths including V-forward, settees, quarter berth, galley, heads, and good storage/tankage), inboard auxiliary (often Universal diesel or Atomic 4 gas), and a reputation as a forgiving, stable, affordable family coastal cruiser with competitive club racing potential—roomy, easy to handle, and well-suited for weekend/overnight trips or light offshore use, though not a heavy bluewater boat.
