Newport 27 S Standard Rig
Description
The Newport 27 S (often labeled Newport 27S or Newport 27 S) is a refined variant in the Newport 27 series built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by C&C Design (Cuthbertson & Cassian). Introduced around 1974 as an update/improvement over the original Newport 27-1 (Mk I), it was produced through the late 1970s–early 1980s (with some overlap into later Mk II/III evolutions), featuring fiberglass (GRP) construction, a masthead sloop rig (standard configuration), fin keel with spade rudder for balanced handling, and emphasis on spacious interior volume for its size (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths, galley, heads, quarter berth). The "S" designation typically indicates a "special" or updated model with refinements like improved ergonomics, better fit/finish details, or slight rig/hull tweaks for enhanced coastal cruising and club racing performance—while retaining the line's reputation for affordability, stability (ballast/displacement ~40%), and forgiving nature suitable for families or couples.
