Newport 27 Mk II Standard Rig
Description
The Newport 27 Mk II (also called Newport 27 Mark II or Newport 27-2 in some references) is a mid-series evolution of the popular American cruiser-racer built by Capital Yachts Inc. in Harbor City, California, designed by C&C Design (Cuthbertson & Cassian). Introduced around the mid-1970s (following the original Mk I/27-1 from 1970–1971 and overlapping with the "S" variants), it was produced through the late 1970s–early 1980s as part of the overall Newport 27 run (hundreds of hulls across variants). It features fiberglass (GRP) construction, a masthead sloop rig (standard configuration), fin keel with spade rudder, and the same spacious interior as the line (stand-up headroom ~6 ft, 4–6 berths, galley, heads, quarter berth)—with refinements like improved deck/cockpit ergonomics, better hardware fit/finish, and often the deeper keel option for enhanced upwind performance compared to early Mk I models. It's regarded as a solid, roomy, forgiving family coastal cruiser-racer with good stability, decent light-air capability, and strong value in used markets—many examples still actively sailed with typical refits (e.g., engine swaps, rigging updates).
