Newport 17
Description
The Newport 17 (also known as Lockley Newport 17) is a compact, trailerable American daysailer/micro-cruiser built by Lockley Newport Boats Inc. (USA), designed by Harry R. Sindle (a noted small-boat designer). Production ran from 1974 to around 1980, with a modest number of hulls constructed in fiberglass (FG/GRP) featuring a fractional sloop rig, swing keel/centerboard for shallow draft and easy trailering/beaching, and a small cuddy cabin for occasional overnights or storage—emphasizing affordability, simplicity, and fun family daysailing on lakes, bays, or protected coastal waters. It's praised by owners for lightweight handling, decent stability (despite modest displacement), surprising roominess for its size (sleeps 2–4 minimally), and good performance in moderate winds, though it's basic/entry-level (no heavy bluewater credentials like the larger cruisers in your series). Many 1970s examples remain active with updates (e.g., new rigging, sails, or outboards), and there's a small but dedicated owner community (e.g., Facebook groups for Lockley/Newport daysailers).
