Newport 16
Description
The Newport 16 is a 16‑foot trailerable daysailer designed by Bill Lapworth and built by Lockley Newport Boats (USA) beginning in the late 1960s. Intended as an affordable, easy‑to‑sail family dinghy‑keelboat hybrid, the Newport 16 was produced in several hundred units through the 1970s and 1980s. It features a lightweight fiberglass hull, a simple masthead sloop rig, and a pivoting centerboard, making it suitable for beaching, trailering, and learning to sail. Known for its stability, roomy cockpit, and straightforward handling, the Newport 16 became a popular cottage‑sailer and club‑training boat, often compared to the O’Day 15/17 and other small centerboard cruisers of the era.
