New York Yacht Club 48
Description
The New York 48 (also known as New York Yacht Club 48 or NYYC 48) is a limited-production American bluewater cruiser-racer commissioned by the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) as a one-design offshore class in the mid-1970s. It was essentially a customized variant of the Swan 47 (designed by Sparkman & Stephens, S&S design #2201), adapted with a centerboard keel (keel/CB) configuration instead of the standard fixed keel to meet NYYC's specific parameters for a 48–55 ft LOA yacht that rated well under IOR rules while offering excellent seaworthiness and cruising comfort. Built by Nautor Oy (Nautor Swan) in Finland, the NY 48 used hulls starting from Swan 47 hull number 60 onward (the Swan 47 had 60 fixed-keel units built from 1975–1984, so the NY 48 represented a small tail-end modification of the mold). Exact quantity of NY 48 hulls is not precisely documented but limited (likely low dozens at most, as a club-specific adaptation rather than mass production), emphasizing robust GRP construction, a masthead sloop rig, luxurious teak interior (typically 2–3 cabins with 6–8 berths, spacious saloon/galley/heads, and ample tankage), and proven bluewater credentials (many examples cruised extensively with strong stability and handling). It's praised for timeless S&S lines, balanced performance (good in moderate/strong winds, comfortable motion), and enduring classic appeal among offshore enthusiasts.
