New York 40

New York 40

Description

The New York 40 (also known as NY 40 or Peterson New York 40) is a classic American offshore one-design racer-cruiser commissioned by the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) members for club racing and long-distance cruising. Designed by renowned American naval architect Doug Peterson (known for IOR successes like the Ganbare and Contessa 35 influences), it was built by Palmer Johnson (with hulls molded by O.J. Young and keels by New Orleans Marine/Tom Dreyfus) from 1977 to around 1980. Exactly 20 hulls were produced as a strict one-design class (limited to NYYC members initially, with some later sold privately), featuring a masthead sloop rig, fin keel with spade rudder for responsive handling, lightweight yet strong fiberglass (GRP) construction (often cored for stiffness), and a functional cruiser-racer interior (typically 2 cabins with 6–7 berths, galley, heads, nav station, and good tankage/storage for extended passages). It's praised for excellent performance in moderate to strong winds (fast, stable, and seaworthy with proven offshore credentials), balanced lines, and enduring appeal among classic IOR-era enthusiasts—many still race actively in vintage or PHRF fleets today.
