Description
The Nauticat 42 is a Finnish-built pilothouse motorsailer designed by Kaj Gustafsson and first produced in 1995 by Nauticat Yachts (formerly Siltala Yachts) in Pietarsaari, Finland, as a generously proportioned successor to the Nauticat 39, delivering heavy-displacement stability, expansive all-weather visibility through its raised deck saloon, and opulent liveaboard accommodations tailored for couples or families on ambitious bluewater or coastal explorations under sail or power. Constructed from single-skin fiberglass with a fin keel and skeg-hung rudder for protected, balanced handling, it displaces 35,274 pounds with 10,141 pounds of lead ballast, measures 42.65 feet LOA, 33.96 feet LWL, 13.12 feet beam, and 6.40 feet draft, achieving a hull speed of approximately 7.8 knots and 772 square feet of sail area under a masthead sloop rig (with ketch optional) powered by a reliable 80-100 HP Yanmar diesel engine with 185 gallons each of fuel and water capacity for extended motoring autonomy. Celebrated for its fortress-like seaworthiness, 360-degree saloon panoramas, warm teak-trimmed interior boasting 6'5" headroom across two- or three-stateroom configurations sleeping up to eight, a U-shaped galley, dedicated nav station, and versatile inside/outside helms, the Nauticat 42 was produced through 2018 with around 200 units built, enduring as a premium icon for traditionalists who value unyielding durability, serene comfort, and effortless short-handed operation on passages where reliability trumps raw speed.
