Nauticat 40 Ketch
Description
The Nauticat 40 is a Finnish-built pilothouse motorsailer designed by the acclaimed American firm Sparkman & Stephens and first produced in 1984 by Siltala Yachts in Pietarsaari, Finland, as a substantial evolution in the brand's lineup—bridging traditional heavy-displacement seaworthiness with enhanced sailing performance—featuring the staysail ketch rig for balanced, short-handed sail handling across main, genoa, staysail, and mizzen sails, ideal for couples or small families on extended coastal or bluewater passages under power or canvas. Constructed from solid fiberglass with a fin keel and skeg-hung rudder for protected stability and agile tracking, it displaces 30,865 pounds with 8,819 pounds of ballast, measures 39.37 feet LOA, 32.81 feet LWL, 13.12 feet beam, and 5.75 feet draft, delivering a hull speed of approximately 7.6 knots and 948 square feet of sail area powered by a robust 90 HP Ford Lehman diesel engine with generous 198 gallons each of fuel and water capacity for exceptional motoring range exceeding 800 nautical miles. Renowned for its fortress-like build quality, panoramic 360-degree saloon visibility, warm teak-trimmed interior with 6'3" headroom across three cabins sleeping up to seven (including a full-beam aft owner's suite with en-suite head), U-shaped galley, dedicated nav station, and versatile inside/outside helms, the Nauticat 40 was produced through 1993 with around 50 units built, cementing its legacy as a premium classic for traditionalists seeking unyielding durability, serene all-weather comfort, and effortless versatility where reliability and refinement outshine outright velocity.
