Morgan OI 33
Description
The Morgan Out Island 33 (OI 33) is a compact, shoal-draft cruising sloop from the early days of the celebrated Out Island series, designed by Charles Morgan and built by Morgan Yachts in Largo, Florida, as an entry-level model for coastal and island-hopping adventures in shallow waters like the Bahamas or Florida Keys. Introduced in mid-1971 with preliminary drafts finalized by 1972 and production starting in 1973, it was conceived as a "charter member" of the line—emphasizing affordability, stability, and roomy interiors over high performance—sharing the series' signature full keel for gunkholing and a beamy hull for family comfort, though its short production run (through the mid-1970s, with a motorsailer variant in 1980) makes it less common than the larger OI 41. Constructed in hand-laid fiberglass with a teak interior featuring a V-berth forward, saloon settee, galley down, and enclosed head, the OI 33 earned a reputation as a budget-friendly starter cruiser, stable in moderate seas but rolly in beam swells, with owners noting its forgiving nature for novices.
