Description
The Morgan Out Island 28 (OI 28) is the pint-sized pioneer of the beloved Out Island series, a shoal-draft masthead sloop designed by Charles Morgan and built by Morgan Yachts in Largo, Florida, from 1973 to 1976 as an affordable, stable entry-level cruiser for coastal waters, family weekends, or gentle island explorations like the Florida Keys or Intracoastal Waterway—sharing the line's emphasis on interior volume and ease over outright speed, with a compact fiberglass hull featuring a fin keel and spade rudder for responsive handling in protected bays, though its short production run (fewer than 100 built) makes it a rarity today compared to the prolific OI 41. Constructed with hand-laid fiberglass and a modest teak interior including a V-berth forward, saloon settees, galley down, and enclosed head, the OI 28 was powered initially by a reliable Universal Atomic 4 gas engine (later diesel repowers common), earning praise as a "starter sailboat" for novices with its forgiving stability and low maintenance.
