Kaufman 49 (CT-49)

Description

The Kaufman 49 (also known as the CT-49 or Taiwan Trader 49) is a robust, bluewater-capable center-cockpit cutter-rigged sloop designed by F. Michael Kaufman of the firm Kaufman & Ladd, and built by Ta Chiao Shipbuilding Co. in Taiwan from 1982 to 1989 as a stretched evolution of the popular CT-47 for serious offshore cruising and liveaboard use, emphasizing seaworthiness, spacious interiors, and versatility with options for ketch rig, aft cockpit, or pilothouse layouts in a fiberglass fin-keel hull that balances performance and comfort for couples or families tackling long passages in the trades or high latitudes. With approximately 80 hulls produced, it shares the Ta Chiao yard's reputation for solid construction (hand-laid fiberglass with balsa-cored deck) and value, often praised by delivery skipper John Kretschmer (who sails a similar Kaufman 47) as a "thoroughbred" for its tracking ability and heavy-weather forgiveness,
