Morgan 46 Sloop
Description
The Morgan 46 Sloop (also known as the Morgan 462 Sloop in some references) is a classic center-cockpit bluewater cruiser designed by Henry Scheel and built by Morgan Yachts in Largo, Florida, from 1978 to 1983 as a versatile, family-oriented offshore performer blending heavy-displacement stability with moderate speed for trade-wind passages or Caribbean charters, featuring a spoon bow, skeg-hung rudder for protected steering, and a spacious teak interior with aft master stateroom, forward guest cabin, U-galley, saloon, and two heads sleeping 6–7 in a fiberglass fin-keel hull that's forgiving in heavy weather but requires diligent maintenance on chainplates and deck cores. With around 100 hulls produced (sloop and ketch variants), it earned a reputation as a "competent and comfortable" workhorse—praised for pointing well upwind in 20-knot blows and averaging 7–8 knots on reaches—though its 1960s aesthetic and aging systems make it a refit project for modern sailors, often upgraded with roller furling or repowers for continued bluewater duty.
