The Morgan 45 Cruiser N/M, designed by the acclaimed Nelson/Marek team and built by Morgan Yachts from 1983 to 1986 with around 50 units produced, transforms a Transpac Race-winning IOR hull into a performance-oriented cruiser via its fin keel and spade rudder configuration (standard 7.92 ft draft; optional shoal at 4.92 ft or keel/centerboard 4.9-7.42 ft for versatile coastal access), appealing to offshore sailors desiring speed and seaworthiness in an aft-cockpit layout suited for East Coast or transoceanic passages. Measuring 45.33 feet LOA with a 13.42-foot beam, 36.75-foot LWL, and 22,500-pound displacement (including 9,950 pounds of lead ballast), it deploys 902 square feet of sail area in a masthead sloop rig (tall rig option available), yielding a lively sail area/displacement ratio of 18.18 for quick acceleration and strong upwind pointing in waves—PHRF 60-72, hull speed of 8.12 knots, and comfort ratio of 27.84 with a stiff 44% ballast/displacement for balanced, dry motion, though its displacement/length of 202 makes it tender in heavy gusts, prone to downwind broaching under spinnaker, and requiring active helming in big seas.
