The Morgan 44 (also known as the Catalina Morgan 44), designed by the esteemed Nelson/Marek team and built by Morgan Yachts (later Catalina) from 1988 to 1990 with approximately 50 units produced, reimagines an IOR-influenced hull as a center-cockpit cruiser with fin keel and skeg-hung rudder (5 ft draft standard; optional deeper versions), balancing offshore seaworthiness with live-aboard comforts for East Coast or island-hopping sailors who prioritize ease over outright racing thrills. Measuring 44 feet LOA with a 13.5-foot beam, 35.33-foot LWL, and substantial 23,500-pound displacement (including 8,200 pounds of lead ballast), it carries 797 square feet of sail area in a masthead sloop rig, posting a moderate sail area/displacement ratio of 15.60 for responsive yet forgiving performance—estimated PHRF 120-140, hull speed of 7.96 knots, and comfort ratio of 29.91 with a ballast/displacement of 34.89% for stable, dry motion in waves, though its displacement/length of 238 renders it deliberate in light air, tender in gusts requiring early reefing, and best suited to balanced conditions rather than extreme downwind runs.
