Morgan 402 MS
Description
The Morgan 402 MS (Motorsailer), a rare pilothouse variant of the standard 402 designed by Charles Morgan and built by Morgan Yachts in the mid-1970s with extremely limited production (fewer than 20 units estimated), adapts the center-cockpit cruiser platform for power-assisted voyaging with its fin keel and skeg-hung rudder (approximately 5 ft draft), featuring a compact masthead sloop rig optimized for ICW bridge clearance and emphasizing motoring reliability for coastal or inland waterway cruisers on routes like the Great Loop or Florida Keys. Measuring 40 feet LOA with a 12.5-foot beam, 32-foot LWL, and around 18,500-pound displacement (bolstered by roughly 7,000 pounds of lead ballast), it deploys approximately 700 square feet of sail area (I=41.25 ft, J=14.33 ft, P=34 ft, E=17.5 ft) for a moderate sail area/displacement ratio of about 16.8, yielding solid but conservative performance—hull speed around 7.3 knots and comfort ratio in the high 20s—that supports light-air motoring augmentation with balanced pointing in 8-15 knots but feels deliberate overall due to its displacement/length near 250, prone to weather helm in puffs, and best as a powerboat with sails for stabilization rather than pure sailing thrills.
