The Morgan 30/2, designed by Charles Morgan and built by Morgan Yachts from 1972 to 1976 with approximately 150 units produced, marks a departure from the brand's earlier shoal-draft offerings toward a fixed-keel racer-cruiser archetype with its fin keel and skeg-hung rudder configuration (5.25 ft draft), ideal for club racing or coastal passages on venues like the Great Lakes or mid-Atlantic where pointing ability trumps gunkholing access. Measuring 29.41 feet LOA with an 11.33-foot beam, 27.50-foot LWL, and 10,000-pound displacement (including 5,000 pounds of lead ballast), it deploys 503 square feet of sail area in a masthead sloop rig, achieving a solid sail area/displacement ratio of 17.40 for lively upwind performance—PHRF ratings in the 160s, hull speed of 7.03 knots, and comfort ratio of 21.71 with a ballast/displacement of 50% for stiff, balanced handling in waves, though its displacement/length of 215 renders it moderate in light air, squirrelly on deep reaches or runs requiring a versatile sail wardrobe, and tender in gusts demanding attentive reefing.
