Morgan 24/25
Description
The Morgan 25 (also known as the Morgan 24/25), designed by Charles Morgan and built by Morgan Yachts from 1965 to 1976 with approximately 460 units produced, marks an early triumph in affordable production fiberglass sailboats as a trailerable racer-cruiser blending CCA-era seaworthiness with shallow-draft versatility via its modified long keel, retractable centerboard (draft 2.8 ft up to 7 ft down), and spade rudder, ideal for coastal club racing or family weekends in protected waters like bays or the Intracoastal Waterway. At 24.92 feet LOA with an 8-foot beam, 21.5-foot LWL, and 4,900-pound displacement (including 1,900 pounds of lead ballast), it deploys 306 square feet of sail area in a masthead sloop rig, delivering a sprightly sail area/displacement ratio of 17.02 for responsive performance—PHRF 219-225, hull speed of 6.21 knots, and comfort ratio of 21.06—that excels in 5-15 knots with weatherly pointing, easy self-steering on beats, and surprising speed in light air thanks to its long waterline and low wetted surface, though it stiffens in gusts, broaches under spinnaker in heavy weather, and requires early reefing beyond 15 knots while feeling deliberate compared to modern designs.
