The Morgan 1 Ton (also known as the Heritage One Tonner), designed by Charles Morgan and built by Morgan Yachts from 1975 to 1977 with limited production (around 20 units), captures the IOR one-ton rule's emphasis on offshore racing prowess through its fin keel and spade rudder hull (6.5 ft draft), delivering thrilling performance for club or ocean races on circuits like the SORC or Fastnet while offering basic cruising utility for East Coast or transatlantic adventurers. Measuring 37 feet LOA with a beamy 12-foot beam, 28-foot LWL, and 13,500-pound displacement (including 6,500 pounds of lead ballast), it hoists 650 square feet of sail area in a masthead sloop rig (I=50 ft, J=15.5 ft, P=45 ft, E=11.8 ft), boasting a sail area/displacement ratio of 17.7 for explosive acceleration in 10-20 knots—estimated PHRF 90-105, hull speed of 7.09 knots, and comfort ratio of 25.07 with a ballast/displacement of 48% for stiff, sea-kindly balance that powers through waves with a dry foredeck and quick pointing, though its displacement/length of 248 renders it moderate in light air, tender in gusts demanding early reefing, and squirrelly downwind under spinnaker without a drogue.
