Mirage 28 Masthead Rig (Kelley 28)
Description
The Mirage 28 (Kelley), also known as the Kelley 28, is a rare American MORC (Midget Ocean Racing Club) racer designed by Bruce Kelley and built by Mirage Manufacturing (Gainesville, Florida) in 1980, with only about 14 hulls produced as a custom high-performance sloop optimized for inshore handicap racing. This lightweight fiberglass fin-keel hull with spade rudder emphasizes speed and agility (PHRF ~141–156, SA/D 17.6) in light to moderate winds, featuring a wide beam for form stability and a pinched stern for planing, but with basic accommodations for 4 (V-berth forward, settee berths, minimal galley/head) suited to short races or day sails rather than extended cruising—rewarding skilled sailors but tender in heavy air; variants include fractional and tall masthead rigs for tuned performance, often refitted with modern outboards or rigging for vintage fleets.
