Malabar II 42' Schooner
Description
The Malabar II is a classic 42-foot gaff-rigged schooner designed by renowned American naval architect John Alden (his design #357) in 1921 for his own use. The original Malabar II was built in 1921 by George F. Lawson in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, as a fast, comfortable offshore cruiser-racer. She won the Bermuda Race in 1923 and 1926, and her lines proved so popular that Alden licensed replicas and variations—several "Malabar II-type" schooners were built over the decades (e.g., by Paul Luke in Maine and others), often with slight modifications (e.g., different rigs, interiors, or materials). The design is celebrated for its beauty, speed, and seaworthiness—long overhangs, moderate displacement, fine entry, and powerful gaff schooner rig make it a standout among Alden's work. It's a true "gold-plater" classic: elegant, capable offshore, and still raced or cruised today (e.g., some participate in vintage events like the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta).
