Macgregor 25
Description
The MacGregor 25 is an iconic American fiberglass trailerable sailboat designed by Roger MacGregor and originally built as the Venture 25 by Venture Yachts from 1973 to 1980. In 1981, production shifted to MacGregor Yacht Corp. (founded by Roger MacGregor, a former Ford employee), where it was rebranded as the MacGregor 25 with minimal changes. This "everyman's sailboat" emphasized affordability, ease of trailering, and accessibility, selling over 7,000 units until production ended in 1987. It was inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame in 2000 for democratizing sailing, much like the Model T did for cars. Known for its lightweight water-ballast system (filled via hull ports for stability, drained for towing), it's a versatile coastal cruiser and racer—nimble under sail but underpowered in light air. Variants include the masthead sloop (MH) rig (from 1980) for better headsail options.
