Long Steps standard rig

Description

The Long Steps is an adventurous sail-and-oar micro-cruiser designed by New Zealand naval architect John Welsford (the same designer behind favorites like Scamp, Tread Lightly, and Pathfinder). Introduced around 2016-2017 as Welsford's personal "expedition boat," it's built for ambitious coastal voyages, including multi-day open-water passages, potential beach launches through surf, self-recovery from capsize, and serious single- or short-handed cruising. The name ties into his series: Tread Lightly (gentle on the earth), Walkabout (wandering spirit), and Long Steps for covering serious distance! It's a development of Scamp's concepts—water ballast, offset centerboard (freeing up cockpit space), self-draining floor, and a cozy "veranda" cuddy—but stretched longer and refined for better speed, rowing efficiency, and offshore capability. Welsford designed it with a circumnavigation of New Zealand's North Island in mind, emphasizing safety, comfort for an aging skipper, and versatility.
