Lancer 45 Motorsailer
Description
The Lancer 45 Motorsailer (also simply called the Lancer 45) is a classic American motorsailer designed by Herb David and produced by Lancer Yacht Corporation (Irvine, California) from 1981 to 1985. It fits perfectly in the Lancer motorsailer series (alongside the 39, 44, and larger models we've discussed), prioritizing reliable, powerful motoring (often with twin diesels for efficient long-range cruising and speeds of 8-10+ knots under power) while still delivering "tolerably good" sailing performance in a decent breeze—ideal for coastal explorers, Great Lakes sailors, or those wanting protection from variable weather without full dependence on sail alone. These boats feature a raised pilothouse or enclosed center cockpit for excellent 360-degree visibility, all-weather helm protection, and comfortable shorthanded operation (lines often led aft to the pilothouse). Built in limited numbers, they're rare today but praised for spacious interiors, good stability, and versatility as liveaboards or extended cruisers.
