Lancer 44
Description
The Lancer 44 (also known as the Lancer 44 Motorsailer) is a classic American motorsailer designed by Herb David and built by Lancer Yacht Corporation (Irvine, California) from 1979 to 1982. Like the larger Lancer 65 we discussed earlier, this model emphasizes the hybrid appeal: strong motoring capability (often with twin diesels for speeds around 8-10+ knots under power) combined with respectable sailing performance for a motorsailer of its era. It's built primarily of fiberglass, with a pilothouse design for all-weather comfort, spacious accommodations, and excellent visibility—ideal for extended cruising, liveaboard use, or those who want protection from the elements without sacrificing too much sail potential. These boats were produced in limited numbers (making them fairly rare today), and owners frequently highlight their practicality: economical twin-engine operation, good fuel efficiency for a motorsailer, solid build quality, and enough sail area to handle coastal or even occasional offshore passages when conditions suit.
