The Lancer 40 Motorsailer (often simply called the Lancer 40) is a classic American motorsailer/cruiser produced by Lancer Yacht Corp. (Irvine, California) from 1983 to 1985. Designed by Herb David (who penned many of Lancer's unique motor Sailers), it emphasizes reliable, high-speed motoring with auxiliary sailing capability—part of the brand's "Power Sailer" philosophy. While not officially branded "PS" like smaller models (e.g., Lancer 29 PS or 27 PS), it fits the hybrid category: capable of 10+ knots under power (with strong inboard diesel options) while still performing tolerably well under sail in moderate conditions. It's a recreational keelboat with fiberglass construction, wood trim, a masthead sloop rig, raked stem, angled transom (often with integrated swim platform), skeg-mounted rudder (wheel steering), and fixed fin keel.
