Lancer 39 Motorsailor

Description

The Lancer 39 Motorsailer (also called the Lancer 39 or Lancer 39 Pilothouse Motorsailer) is a compact yet capable American motorsailer designed by Herb David and produced by Lancer Yacht Corporation (Irvine, California) from around 1981–1983 (some sources note 1982–1983 production). Like the other Lancer motorsailers in the series (e.g., the 44 and 65 we discussed earlier), it prioritizes reliable power performance with decent sailing ability—perfect for coastal cruising, extended passages in variable weather, or liveaboard comfort without relying solely on wind. These boats feature a distinctive pilothouse layout for excellent all-around visibility and protection from the elements, making them great for cooler climates or year-round use (handy for Great Lakes sailors in Indiana!). They were built in limited numbers, so they're quite rare today, with a focus on practicality: strong engine(s) for motoring through calms or headwinds, while still offering "tolerable" (per owner reports) performance under sail.
