Lancer 36 Farr Rig
Description
The Lancer 36 Farr Rig (more formally known as the Lancer 36 FR or Lancer 36 Fractional Rig) is a performance-oriented version of the classic Lancer 36 sailboat, produced by Lancer Yacht Corporation (Irvine, California) from 1982 to 1985. This model is a development of the original Lancer 36 (designed by Bill Lee, with roots in the legendary West Coast racer "Chutzpah" that won the Transpac in 1973 and 1975). The key upgrade here is the fractional sloop rig designed by renowned naval architect Bruce Farr, which provides better upwind performance, easier sail handling (especially shorthanded), and a more modern, balanced feel compared to the earlier masthead rigs with large overlapping genoas. Owners and sailors often praise the Bill Lee / Bruce Farr collaboration for delivering a lightweight, responsive boat that's surprisingly solid, quick to accelerate, and fun to sail—ideal for both coastal cruising and occasional racing. It's lightweight yet stiff, points well for its era, and handles heavy weather confidently when properly maintained.
