Lancer 36 1977 First Design
Description
The Lancer 36 (often referred to as the original or "first design" version from the early production years, including 1977 models) is the classic racer-cruiser built by Lancer Yacht Corporation starting in 1973. This is the masthead sloop rig variant, directly based on the legendary West Coast racer Chutzpah (designed and built by Bill Lee in 1972/1973), which famously won the Transpac Race overall in both 1973 and 1975—making it one of the smallest boats ever to claim that title twice. The 1977-era boats represent the early production run of this hull mold, emphasizing lightweight performance with a focus on downwind/reaching speed (typical of Bill Lee's IOR-influenced designs from that era). These are fast, responsive boats that plane or surf in the right conditions, but they can feel a bit tender upwind compared to heavier cruisers due to their light displacement. Owners often describe them as "slippery" and fun, with excellent handling in moderate to heavy air when properly sailed.
