Kalik 44 Charter Rig
Description
The "Charter Rig" designation refers to a modified rig configuration (e.g., in-mast furling mainsail, smaller or simplified headsails, or easier handling for charter crews) adapted for commercial/charter use, as noted in some PHRF handicap records and owner discussions where charter versions received separate ratings or modifications for short-handed operation. The standard Kalik 44 features a fin keel with skeg-mounted rudder for balanced performance and protection, solid fiberglass (GRP) construction with strong layup for offshore durability, a masthead sloop rig (fractional in some reports but primarily masthead), spacious accommodations (up to 7–8 berths in 3–4 cabins, large saloon/galley, and good storage/tankage for long passages), and excellent seaworthiness—praised as safe, reliable, and built to last with good motion in rough seas. It's a stretched evolution of the Kalik 40/Ocean 40/Concept 40 hull, emphasizing comfort for family/liveaboard or charter voyaging. Production was limited (dozens built, not high-volume), with surviving hulls (mostly 1980–1986 era) occasionally listed as refitted classics (e.g., examples like "Morning Dew" from 1986 in Florida).
