James Cook
Description
The Glen-L James Cook (often just called the James Cook) is a compact, trailerable cruising sailboat designed by Glen-L Marine (Glen-L's in-house design team) for home boatbuilders. It is modeled after larger ocean-going types but scaled down for trailering, launching from ramps, and practical cruising. Plans are available for cold-molded wooden construction (plywood/epoxy) or one-off fiberglass (GRP), with detailed instructions, full-size patterns, and options for sloop or cutter rig. It emphasizes traditional appearance (taffrail, bowsprit, teak-veneered decks on some builds), good headroom (standing in the main cabin), and family-friendly layout (berths for 4–6, V-berth forward, settees, compact galley/heads, and storage). The design prioritizes stability with a low sail plan and mast height for easier trailering/launching. Production is limited to amateur-built examples (no factory series), with many completed boats praised for their looks and seaworthiness in coastal/short offshore use.
