J/92
Description
The J/92 (1992–2003) is a 29′11″ fractional-rigged sports boat that J/Boats designed by Rod Johnstone as a versatile one-design racer-cruiser: 5,500 lb displacement with a 2,275 lb bulb keel, 470 sq ft of sail on an aluminum mast, a spacious 10-foot beam, and a 5′9″ draft that delivers a D/L of ~132 and an SA/D of ~24 for lively, responsive performance—capable of mid-teens surfing with the asymmetric spinnaker while pointing respectably upwind. Its open cockpit seats a crew of 5–6 for beer-can races or short-handed daysailing, with a functional V-berth forward, saloon settees, and a compact galley/head for overnighting, all in a low-profile cabin that emphasizes simplicity and speed over luxury. With a reputation for forgiving handling, competitive PHRF ratings around 105–115, and easy trailering under 8,000 lb loaded, it's the pocket rocket for sailors craving J/Boats' signature fun-to-sail DNA in a sub-30-foot package; an updated J/92S variant arrived in 2005 with refined ergonomics and a carbon sprit. A total of 180 J/92s were built by Tillotson-Pearson (TPI) before production ended in 2003, establishing a strong one-design class in Europe and the U.S. with enduring fleets today.
