J/34C
Description
The J/34C (1985–1989) is the cruiser-oriented version of the rare J/34 racer, essentially the same slippery hull and powerful fractional rig (650 sq ft upwind, SA/D ~27) but with a taller, more comfortable cabin house, a proper teak interior, and genuine liveaboard amenities. At 34′ LOA, 9,900 lb displacement, and 4,600 lb ballast in a 6′3″ deep fin (or 5′ shoal), it retains almost all of the racer’s speed and balance while adding 6′3″ headroom, a full U-shaped galley, large enclosed head with shower, a true nav station, and a spacious aft cabin with a double berth—making it one of the fastest “cruiser-racers” of its era that actually works as a weekender or coastal cruiser without feeling like a stripped-out IOR machine. Many owners crossed oceans or raced transatlantic with them; PHRF ratings are typically 90–102. Only 28 J/34C hulls were built by Tillotson-Pearson before the model was discontinued, giving it near-mythical status today
