J/120
Description
The J/120, introduced in 1994, is a 40-foot (12.19 m) performance cruiser-racer that set the standard for fast, elegant shorthanded sailing in its size range. With a sleek low-profile hull, carbon-fiber mast (62 ft air draft), Hall Spars carbon wheel, bulb keel (7 ft draft standard, 6 ft shoal option), and only 13,900 lb displacement, she carries a powerful yet easily handled fractional rig: 865 sq ft upwind (large square-top mainsail + 105–110 % non-overlapping jib) and a retractable carbon bowsprit for big asymmetrical spinnakers. The result is true 8–10 knot reaching speeds, frequent 200+ nm days offshore, and effortless double- or single-handed sailing thanks to cockpit-led lines, electric halyard winch, and a balanced helm that rarely needs the autopilot in a breeze. Below, the bright cherry or teak interior offers a huge aft owner’s stateroom with centerline queen, spacious forward cabin, generous saloon with 6 ft 6 in headroom, and a proper nav station—luxury rarely found in a 40-footer this light and fast. Approximately 230 were built through 2006.
