J/109
Description
The J/109 is a versatile 35-foot fractional sloop racer-cruiser designed by Rod and Alan Johnstone for J Boats, first introduced in 2004 as a modern evolution of performance-oriented offshore boats, blending speed with weekend cruising comfort through a lightweight fiberglass hull (10,900 pounds displacement) featuring a fin keel with lead bulb (3,900 pounds ballast), 7-foot draft, and an expansive 644-square-foot sail area for a brisk sail-area-to-displacement ratio of 21. Its sleek, low-profile design includes an almost plumb bow, generous 11.5-foot beam for stability, a large cockpit with adjustable genoa tracks and Harken winches, and a carbon sprit for asymmetrical spinnakers, delivering lively, responsive handling—quick acceleration under a 30-hp Volvo diesel, minimal weather helm upwind, and nimble maneuverability in 6-12 knots—while the varnished cherry interior accommodates four to six with a forward double V-berth, aft cabin, U-shaped galley, nav station, saloon settees with pilot berths, and a private head with shower, making it ideal for club racing, coastal passages, or family outings.
