J II Yawl

Description

The J II Yawl was designed by George Cuthbertson of Cuthbertson & Cassian (C&C) in 1973. It was created as a small, fiberglass, two-person training and daysailing yawl specifically for the Royal Canadian Yacht Club’s junior sailing program in Toronto. The boat has a distinctive, classic look: 15′6″ LOA, gaff mainsail, bowsprit, bumpkin, and a tiny mizzen stepped on the transom. The rig is deliberately low and very easy to handle, making it ideal for kids and beginners. Although most people associate Cuthbertson with big C&C racer-cruisers, the J II Yawl (sometimes just called the “RCYC Yawl” or “C&C Yawl Trainer”) is one of his lesser-known but enduring small-boat designs. A few hundred were built in the 1970s–early 1980s (primarily by a small shop in Ontario), and many are still actively sailed in Canadian and northern U.S. junior programs and by private owners.
