Islander P 40

Description

The Islander 40, often referred to as the P40 in homage to its designer Doug Peterson, is an American fiberglass monohull sailboat introduced in 1979 by Islander Yachts as a versatile racer-cruiser, blending competitive performance with comfortable offshore cruising capabilities; production ceased after 1985, with around 70 hulls built. Featuring a masthead sloop rig with aluminum spars, a raked stem, reverse transom, spade rudder, and fixed fin keel (or optional shoal draft), it measures 39.54 feet in length overall, with a 30.83-foot waterline, 11.83-foot beam, 17,000-pound displacement, and 7,700-pound ballast, drawing 7.17 feet standard or 5.16 feet in shoal configuration. Powered by a reliable 42-hp Volkswagen diesel engine, it accommodates six in a practical interior layout including a U-shaped galley with propane stove, navigation station, enclosed head with shower, and ample ventilation via ports and hatches; cockpit sail-handling is efficient with a mainsheet traveler, and it holds a PHRF handicap of about 82 for racing.
