Islander 48
Description
The Islander 48 (1971–1977), designed by Ted Brewer for Islander Yachts in Costa Mesa, California, is a classic aft-cockpit cruiser-racer with 47′11″ LOA, 13′10″ beam, 31–33,000 lb displacement, 13,000 lb encapsulated lead in a long fin keel with skeg-hung rudder (7′ draft standard, some 6′ shoal), and 1,090 sq ft of sail giving an SA/D of ~19–20 and PHRF 78–90. Built very solidly in hand-laid fiberglass with a luxurious teak interior, it features a three-cabin layout including a huge walk-through aft owner’s stateroom with island queen and en-suite head, U-shaped galley, and spacious saloon. Known for stiffness, seaworthiness, and strong offshore performance (multiple Transpac and Ensenada class wins), exactly 42 hulls were completed before Islander Yachts closed in 1977
