Islander 34
Description
The Islander 34, designed by Joseph McGlasson—the founder of Islander Yachts—and introduced in 1964 by Wayfarer Yacht Corp. (later under Islander/Tradewind Yachts) as an evolution of the original Islander 32 with added coach roof, bowsprit, and a rudder inspired by the 1964 America's Cup defender Constellation, is a classic fiberglass masthead sloop racer-cruiser emphasizing seaworthy coastal and offshore voyaging in a compact, affordable package; production was limited to about 14 hulls, with additional kits sold as the Yachtcraft 34 for home completion, reflecting the era's DIY boating ethos. Featuring a solid fiberglass hull with fin keel and skeg-hung rudder, it measures 33.58 feet LOA with a 25.00-foot LWL, 10.00-foot beam, 4.50-foot draft, 10,400-pound displacement, and 3,300 pounds of lead ballast, carrying 471 square feet of sail area on aluminum spars (I=38 ft, J=13.6 ft, P=31.5 ft, E=13.5 ft) for balanced handling under a full-batten main and genoa. Auxiliary power is provided by a reliable 30-hp Universal Atomic 4 gasoline engine with 35 gallons of fuel capacity and 30 gallons of freshwater; the traditional interior sleeps four to five in a cozy layout with V-berth forward, convertible saloon settees, U-shaped galley with gimbaled stove and icebox, and a compact head, all finished in teak joinery with a raised coachroof for headroom and ventilation via dorades and ports.
