Islander 30-2 Tall Rig
Description
The Islander 30 Mk II tall rig, an optional configuration of Robert Finch's acclaimed 1970-1985 masthead sloop racer-cruiser produced by Islander Yachts with over 500 hulls (sharing lines with the Bahama 30 variant), elevates the standard model's performance with a taller single-spreader aluminum rig for enhanced upwind pointing and light-air acceleration while retaining the same spacious, family-oriented coastal voyaging ethos in a durable fiberglass package; built with a solid hull, plywood-cored deck and cabin trunk, inward-flanged hull/deck joint bolted via aluminum toerail, encapsulated lead keel, and foam-filled spade rudder, it measures 30.00 feet LOA with a 24.58-foot LWL, 10.00-foot beam, 5.00-foot draft, 8,600-pound displacement, and 3,500 pounds of ballast for balanced stability. The tall rig deploys 451.5 square feet of sail area on increased dimensions (I=40 ft, J=12.80 ft, P=34 ft, E=11.50 ft) compared to the standard's 446 ft², powered by auxiliary diesels like the 13-hp Volvo MD7A or upgraded Yanmar 3GM30F (27 hp) with 17-20 gallons of fuel and 25 gallons of water; the teak- or mahogany-finished interior sleeps five in a welcoming layout with a large V-berth forward (including holding tank storage), U-shaped galley to port boasting gimbaled stove/oven, sink, and icebox, 6.5-foot convertible settee berths in the saloon with drop-leaf table, starboard double quarterberth, and centerline head with marine toilet, vanity, sink, and shower, all under 6.25 feet of headroom enhanced by dorades, ports, and hatches.
