Islander 30
Description
The Islander 30, designed by Joseph McGlasson—the founder of Islander Yachts—and introduced in 1968 by Wayfarer Yacht Corp. as a brief-production run (limited to a handful of hulls before replacement in 1970) of a raised-deck evolution from the Islander 29, embodies early fiberglass cruising simplicity with a focus on stable coastal voyaging and family-friendly accommodations in a compact, seaworthy package; constructed in solid fiberglass with a fin keel and skeg-hung rudder, it measures 29.58 feet LOA with a 23.33-foot LWL, 8.83-foot beam, shallow 3.67-foot draft, 8,400-pound displacement, and 2,900 pounds of internal lead ballast for reassuring righting moment. Featuring a masthead sloop rig with aluminum spars carrying 355 square feet of sail area (I=32.8 ft, J=10.8 ft, P=28.5 ft, E=12.5 ft) for moderate upwind performance, it relies on a trusty Universal Atomic 4 gasoline inboard (around 30 hp) for auxiliary power, with modest tankage for fuel and water suited to short passages; the practical interior sleeps four comfortably in a traditional layout with a spacious V-berth forward, convertible settee berths in the saloon, compact galley with gimbaled stove and icebox, and a centerline head, all under the raised deck's enhanced headroom and natural light from ports and hatches, finished in era-typical teak trim for cozy appeal.
