Description
The Islander 28 (with the San Francisco Bay Rig, often referred to as the S.F. Bay Rig variant) is a classic American racer-cruiser sailboat designed by Robert H. Perry. Built by Islander Yachts from 1975 to 1985, approximately 430 hulls were produced, with the Bay Rig optimized for the strong, consistent winds of San Francisco Bay—featuring a taller masthead sloop configuration for enhanced upwind performance in local racing fleets like YRA or Wednesday Night Series. It's celebrated for its balanced handling, wide beam for stability, and spacious interior relative to its size, making it a staple for Bay Area day sailing, overnights, and coastal hops. The solid fiberglass hull and lead ballast provide forgiveness in choppy conditions, though many examples benefit from rigging updates due to age.
