Description
The Island Trader 38 Ketch (also marketed as Island Trader 36, 37, or 38 depending on brochure/year) was designed by Hugh Angleman (credited in sales literature; known for classic Sea Witch schooners from the 1920s, though some sources note variations or possible influences from other traditional lines like those resembling CS Chen or borrowed designs), with builders being United Ocean Industries in Taiwan (primary production yard) and imported/sold in the US through Marine Trading International (Bay Head/New Jersey-based distributor); the brief history spans the mid-1970s Taiwan boatbuilding boom when Far East yards produced heavy, traditional-looking cruisers for the American market, with production running from 1975 to 1988 (imported ~1977 onward), featuring exaggerated sheer, clipper bow, bowsprit, taffrails, pin rails, wooden spars (early), and ornate teak interiors with Chinese motifs; approximately 200 were manufactured over the roughly 10–13-year run.
