Island Packet 40
Description
The Island Packet 40, designed and built by Bob Johnson at Island Packet Yachts in Largo, Florida, from 1994 to 2000 in a limited production run of 139 hulls, exemplifies the brand's signature full-foil keel philosophy for bulletproof bluewater cruising, blending traditional American styling with robust seaworthiness, shallow-draft versatility for gunkholing, and exceptional liveaboard comfort in a cutter-rigged fiberglass monohull optimized for long-distance passages and family voyaging. Constructed with a solid laminate hull featuring vinylester resin for blister resistance, balsa-cored decks, an inward-flanged hull/deck joint bolted every six inches, and a protected rudder/propeller assembly within the 10,000-pound encapsulated lead keel, it measures 40.00 feet LOA with a 34.00-foot LWL, 12.92-foot beam, 4.67-foot draft, 22,800-pound displacement, and a 43.9% ballast ratio for reassuring stability in heavy weather. The fractional cutter rig deploys 907 square feet of sail area (reported; 774 ft² foretriangle/main) on aluminum spars (I=49.83 ft, J=17.75 ft, P=42.83 ft, E=15.50 ft) with roller-furling genoa, staysail, full-batten mainsail, and optional gennaker for versatile handling—all lines led aft to the secure 8-foot cockpit with Edson wheel steering and raised helm seat. Auxiliary power comes from a reliable 56-hp Yanmar 4JH3BE diesel with 90 gallons of fuel and 170 gallons of water for extended autonomy.
